The Bawn, Malahide – Update

Following representations which I have made on your behalf regarding the on going problems with the foul drainage system in The Bawn, please see below reply from Paul Graham, Engineer with the Water Services Department, Fingal County Council.

“CCTV surveys of the foul drainage system in this area reveal that there are no defects in the pipes. However, many of the residences within the vicinity of The Bawn, (in particular the older ones,) discharge surface water as well as wastewater to the foul sewer network. In addition, wastewater from neighbouring areas, which also contains surface water, is discharged into the network at this location via pumped mains. In times of very heavy and prolonged rainfall, the network at this location becomes surcharged which can cause overflows to occur. In order to ensure that maximum capacity is maintained and in an effort to reduce the occurrences of overflows, these mains are jetted every six months to clear any build up of silt or sludge. A permanent solution to this problem requires an upgrade of the network to include separation between the foul and surface drainage systems.

Plans are in place for a scheme to address the current problems within the Malahide catchment. The scheme objective is to resolve the hydraulic deficiencies within the network and to reduce the incidences of overflows to the Broadmeadow Estuary.
The Consultants Brief has been sent to the DoEHLG for approval and if approved it is planned that a Preliminary Design Report will be available in 2011”.

I will continue to monitor this situation on your behalf, in the meantime if I can be of any further assistance with this or any issue please do not hesitate to contact me
