I can confirm that a decision has been made to proceed with the rebuild and extension at St. Oliver Plunkett’s National School, Malahide.

St. Oliver Plunkett’s is the largest national school in country with over 915 pupils. This is an excellent school and I have been working with school over last numbers of years to advance this project.

I made a firm commitment prior to my election in 2007 that I would do everything I possibly could to ensure that this school project would go ahead. It has been a pleasure to work with the Principal, Tony Healy and the Chairperson of the Board of Management, Alan Markey along with the Parents’ Association to ensure this important project is delivered.

Over the last number of months in particular, I have attended a number of meetings involving the school, officials from the Department of Education and the Minister for Education and Skills. In the past few weeks formal planning talks have been taking place with Fingal County Council about the school rebuild and extension.

I'm absolutely delighted that we have secured the formal commitment for the extension/refurbishment and rebuild. I've spoken to Tony Healy and the Alan Markey and it goes without saying that they too are very pleased with this development.

Education and the provision of education facilities have always been a priority for me. This is a major commitment to St. Oliver Plunkett’s school, the staff, pupils and parents; and the town of Malahide. I am very happy that I've been able to play a positive role in securing this decision.

I expect planning application to be lodged in the coming weeks and following that the school will proceed to issue tender documents for construction of the new school.

Finally I would like to commend Tony Healy, Alan Markey, the Board of Management and all the parents in St. Oliver Plunkett’s for the hard work, commitment and dedication they have shown to the school's future.
