Kenny Brussels visit yet another empty Public Relations Stunt - O’Brien

Commenting this evening, Dublin North Fianna Fáil T.D. Darragh O’Brien said: “Today’s visit to Brussels by Enda Kenny is nothing more than another empty public relations stunt designed to present him as a leader without exposing him to a real debate over his policies.”

“What is more extraordinary is Fine Gael’s stated intention to accept a German proposal that the Irish constitution be amended to limit the budget.”

“The reality is that European countries are already in discussions about changing the operations of the new financial support measures. This includes possible reductions in the interest rate.”

“Various people have already confirmed that Ireland could secure a restructuring of the structure of the support – but every single person involved has confirmed that a detailed commitment to meeting Ireland’s obligations is the first step.”

“Enda Kenny has already voted against a Budget and Finance Bill which are central to securing funding for public services and supports. He’s in favour of tough action except when it has to be implemented.”

“Today he will be on planes for twice the time it would take to hold proper, accountable debates about the plans for Ireland’s future. The more he chooses PR stunts over debate the more people will draw their own conclusions.”
