North Dublin TD and Fianna Fáil election candidate Darragh O’Brien has welcomed the announcement by the National Transport Authority that the ‘nine-year rule’ has been suspended.

“There are over 12,000 taxi operators working in Dublin and every driver has experienced difficult trading conditions due to the economic crisis. The news today that the nine-year rule has been suspended follows a commitment by Minister Pat Carey last week that he supported the removal of the rule,” said Deputy O’Brien.

“Having to replace a taxi is costly even at the best of times. The news that drivers will be spared this cost means one less costs to worry about at these difficult times. Fianna Fáil has reaffirmed its commitment to the taxi industry and will seek to bring about a cap in the number of licenses issued. Across the country this sector faces grave difficulties and our party is firm in its support for these workers,” concluded Deputy O’Brien.
