GARDAÍ SWIFT IN ACTION OVER PORTMARNOCK ARRESTS

I commend the Gardaí on their swift and urgent action following the fatal shooting of a man in Portmarnock in North County Dublin and has extended his sympathies to the family of the deceased.

The entire local community in Portmarnock is still in shock over what happened last night. It's clear this was a premeditated attack. To have such a horrible crime committed in a public area shows how these criminals will go to any lengths. These crimes are totally reprehensible and cannot be tolerated.

This brutal murder is another example of the need for tough anti-gang legislation and strong Garda action. This Fianna Fáil-led Government has passed the toughest legislation in history to tackle criminals' intent on murder and this was done despite some fierce opposition in the Dáil.

This legislation is enabling Gardaí to better investigate crimes and prosecute individuals where serious offences have been carried out. I have spoken to the Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern today at the Fianna Fáil conference in Galway to convey by disgust at this murder in my constituency. The Minister has assured me that the Gardaí are satisfied they have all the powers they need to tackle gang crime.

I want to thank the Gardaí in North Dublin. They have my full support and I know they are working around the clock to ensure the community is safe and I would urge anyone who has information on this crime to contact their local Garda Station.
