I welcome the news that legislation dealing with white collar crime has been given the green light.

The new Criminal Procedure Bill, approved by Government for drafting, will help to ensure that the GardaĆ have the powers they need to tackle very complex crime, in particular white collar crime.

The new legislation will change the detention system to make it much more effective.

There will also be a range of powers requiring persons to answer questions and provide information.

Other procedural changes in relation to legal privilege and the documentary evidence will also be introduced.

This new Bill will ensure that our laws in relation to tacking white collar crime are robust and fit for purpose.

We have all unfortunately seen in recent years the need to have a robust law in place in this area and I hope confidence among the public will be improved by having tough measures in place.
