Fisheries
In Dublin Fingal we have great working harbours in Balbriggan, Skerries, Loughshinny and Rush. And just outside the constituency is the vibrant Howth Harbour.
Our Fisheries need Proper Support
Fisheries are still a significant employer in our area, with many companies exporting significant fish and shellfish to the European and Asian markets. They are not being supported as they should be, however and that’s a big problem. Our produce is second to none, but the fishing industry on the east coast has been largely forgotten. I am totally committed to continuing to advocate strongly for the fishery sector in our area, and I know you will support me in that. There is massive growth potential in this industry, particularly in the shellfish area. With proper support many more good jobs can be created and those fishing businesses developed to a much greater degree. But they must be given the proper supports.
Coastline: Our single most important natural resource
Our harbours and our coastline are very important tourist and heritage features in Dublin Fingal, extending from Sutton to the Delvin River just north of Balbriggan. That lovely sweep of beaches from Claremont and Burrow, to the Velvet Strand in Portmarnock, and Malahide, the Brook and Tower in Portrane, then Rush and Skerries, Loughshinney, Barnageara and Knocknaggin, is just fabulous. I believe it could be the single most important natural resource in the county, in terms of its landscape, its outstanding heritage, and its potential economic benefits. There is massive potential for further development of our harbours. But we will have to start with restoration because, sadly, our harbours have been starved of adequate resources over the years. Our harbours should be a vibrant part of our communities and have the resources to develop their great tourist potential.
Priority Status
In conjunction with the fisheries and tourism sectors we must develop an agreed action plan for the fishery sector in our harbours, and for all coastline–related activities (including that of harbours) that can be delivered for the benefit of the citizens of Fingal and for all our visitors. This should be given priority status
