The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has published its monthly data on the number of Commencement Notices (residential construction starts) for June 2024.
There were 1,663 homes commenced in June 2024. For the first six months of 2024 (January – June), there were 33,784 homes commenced, more than double (up 117%) the 15,561 units commenced in the first half of 2023. The number of commencements for the first half of 2024 is now greater than that the number commenced in the whole of 2023 (32,801). In the last 12 months (July 2023 to June 2024) there have been 51,024 units commenced, up 80% from the 28,369 commenced in the prior 12 months (July 2022 to June 2023). Of the 1,663 homes commenced in June 2024, 37% are scheme dwellings, 51% are apartments and 12% are for one-off units. Of all homes commenced in June, 45% were in the four Dublin local authorities.
