Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Trade, Darragh O'Brien TD has again expressed his concern regarding the deterioration in the health of Ibrahim Halawa, who has being detained in Egypt without trial for over three years.
His comments come as Ibrahim’s family have spoken about the danger of him contracting an infectious disease while in a cell which he has shared with almost 60 other inmates since his arrest in August 2013. "This situation remains deeply traumatising, not only for Ibrahim but also for his family and loved ones. It is clear that the past 3 years of detention without trial has taken a toll on his health and wellbeing,” he added. “I recently welcomed news that an independent medical expert would be nominated by the chief medical officer to travel to Egypt to assess Ibrahim's health. It is my understanding that a doctor visited Ibrahim last week and has recommended his release in order to receive further medical assessment. “We now require an update from the Minister on Ibrahim’s health, as well as assurance that he is receiving appropriate medical attention. Furthermore, the Government must detail what mechanisms are currently in operation to secure Ibrahim's release. “It is important that high level engagement with Egyptian authorities is maintained to bring resolution to this case before it moves closer to a fourth year of suffering. We must continue to voice our vehement opposition to this inhumane situation,” concluded the Deputy. Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Trade Darragh O’Brien TD has condemned the attack at the Sennaya Ploshchad metro station, in the centre of the Russian city of Saint Petersburg, which has left at least 10 people dead and 50 injured.
Commenting on the attack Deputy O’Brien said, “This is a horrific attack which appears to have been intentional and has left at least 10 people dead and scores of others injured. "On behalf of my party colleagues, I extend my deepest sympathies to the people of Russia, to the families of those who have lost loved ones and also to those who have been injured. “While there has been no immediate claim for responsibility for the explosion, it is clear that more needs to be done to address the reasons why people are willing to commit such abhorrent acts of violent extremism. “Every life lost or injury inflicted, regardless of the motive or cause, is a crime against humanity." |
